Nourished to Service

For the equipping of the saints for the work of service, to the building up of the body of Christ (Ephesians 4:12)

The gift of pastor-teacher to the body of Christ is a measure of grace purchased in the incarnation resurrection ministry of Jesus Christ. He lays forth the goodness of Himself for the flock of God. Living knowledge produces both edification and service within the church. Stability and maturity will be the result.

There is much conversation among men about the need to be fed through a local church. Healthy doctrine must not be minimized. Both the preacher and the congregant must abide and give themselves to the doctrine of Christ Jesus and His Word. This is the only means of saving grace that results in justification and sanctification (1 Timothy 4:15-16).

However, the goal is not merely being fed but being furnished for the work of service. Food is the nourishment that energizes the body. Food is essential but being fed has a goal –  the service of watchfulness, the service of the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace, the service of speaking the truth in love, the service of building up all saints in love, etc. Our feeding and being fed is deadening unless in all things we are growing up into him.

Glorying in food is foolish if we walk as other Gentiles. The aim is an inner transformation from glory to glory that results in a walk like His walk. The one who says he abides in Him ought himself to walk in the same manner as He walked (1 John 2:6).
